Bio
My experience in the legal profession began more than a decade before I was called to the Ontario Bar. During that time, I worked in immigration law, including as a senior U.S. business legal assistant supporting multinational corporations, entrepreneurs, and professionals in complex cross-border matters. That experience gave me a strong foundation in legal work well before I became a lawyer and continues to influence how I practise family law today.
Immigration law and family law involve very different legal issues, but both often arise at important and uncertain points in people’s lives. That experience taught me to listen carefully, appreciate the circumstances surrounding the legal problem, and explain complicated issues in a way that allows clients to make informed decisions. It also gave me practical experience with how businesses are structured, owned, and operated, which is particularly useful in family matters involving a business, professional practice, or more complicated financial circumstances.
I bring that experience to my work in family law, where understanding the client is often as important as understanding the legal issues. Clients may be making decisions that affect the future of their children, finances, and relationships, sometimes while managing significant personal or financial pressure. I take the time to learn what is happening in their lives and provide clear advice about the available options and what each may involve. I also assist families with adoption matters, which often involve legal considerations that are distinct from other areas of family law.
When advising a client, I consider the advice I would give to someone close to me in the same circumstances. Would I recommend taking this step? Is the issue worth the financial and emotional cost of pursuing it? That perspective requires me to look beyond the immediate legal issue and consider whether a particular course of action makes sense for the client and their family over the longer term.
